RETURN OF THE SOUL : NAKBAH project workshops

The project
A multi-dimensional installation of over 2500 wax figurs, developed through a collaboration with Jane Frere, a Scottish artist in residence with Al Hoash Gallery,and groups of Palestinian artists and teenage children from refugee camps in the region, to creatively express their sense of loss, heritage and identity in a major artwork of international significance.
The theme
The theme of the "Nakbah" (The Catastrophe) is reflected in several ways in an artistic exploration of the human experience of the original displacement of three quarters of a million Palestinians; the result will form a commemorative artwork to mark the 60th year of the events of 1948, and the consequences that continue to affect the lives of millions, and shape the social and political framework of the Middle East still today
the workshops
In order to pass on the concept of the project as well as the methodology for creating the wax figure that will be installed at alhoash exhibiton, The artist gives a six-day workshop to a team of professional Palestinian artists who then work with children from the ages of 14 to 18 years old in refugee camps around the region. Workshops have been given in Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Jordan and Lebanon. Special importance was given to extending the work in camps in the neighbouring countries to ensure that dispersed people of pre-1948 Palestine have been fully represented.
The trainees attending the programme were taught specific skills to become workshop leaders in camps enabling them to focus on Palestinian identity and history as well as the methodology for making wire and paper figurines.

The Palestinian art court held Presentation and announcement of The Nakba Project: Return of the Soul, at the Ethnographic and Art Museum- Birzeit University, the presentation was given by the co-producer artist jane frere and related to the hall journey of the artist and led to tow year process of production of return of the soul exhibition.
The program contained a word by alhoash presented by director rawan sharaf who referred to the different stages of the project and thanked all our partners and donors. |
